My 30 Day Intermittent Fasting Journey ~ Day 1

This is a pretty hot “trend” right now but as many Muslims and people of other faith know, fasting has been around forever. Sadly, having bipolar makes it very hard for me to fast in Ramadan. With the timing of my meds and the ensuing mood swings, it’s very challenging to stay away from food and water.

One of my long-term goals is to do actual fasting in Ramadan inshaAllah but until then, I can definitely start practicing. What attracted me to the intermittent fasting was odd. Some of my meds cause weight gain. And although I don’t want to blame them totally for the lbs I’ve gained, I can’t rule them out fully either. There are times, when my cravings are so high, that I feel at the mercy of food. I feel as if it’s controlling me and I just can’t hold myself back.

So with this 30-day journey, I want to see what happens and how much power I can get back when it comes to eating. I’m doing the 16:8 type. I eat at 12pm and stop eating at 8 pm. Then from 8 till noon the next day, I only have water, tea without milk and sugar.

I’ve been doing IF and OMAD on and off the past two months but I want to commit to a full month now and see what happens. I’m also going to do a weekly weigh-in. The pounds are not really my focus right now. I just want more mental power and clarity. Setting a goal of closing the kitchen at 8 pm is mentally assuring. It’s a self-imposed rule which means I take ownership of eating only from 12 pm-8 pm. I take responsibility for only drinking water from 8 pm till noon the next day.

My goal during the eating window is to cut out snacks and have two meals: one meal at noon and one at 6 pm. I’m also going to be working out as I’m training for my third half-marathon….yikes!

And inshaAllah I will be posting my progress and reflections each day. It sounds like a lot but I will be doing mini-posts and sharing how I feel and the lessons I am learning along the way.
